Ollerenshaw Room
Mathematician and politician who overcame adversity from a young age to become one of the most respected Mancunians of her age. Beginning her teaching career at the university as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, she would go on to hold some of the most illustrious positions in the city – including Lord Mayor of Manchester and the wonderfully named High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. She achieved all this despite being almost completely deaf by the age of eight. Daughter of Mary and Charles Timpson, Kathleen was born in Manchester, into a family which is now one of the biggest British companies established since 1903.Â
